![]() ![]() It's entirely dependent on us viewing the characters as "me." I am Joel. The entire emotional core of the story hinges upon the special bond forged between player and player character - a bond which is not typically present in other media where the story is merely told to you rather than experienced as an active participant. Very few stories have ever impacted me the way TLOU2 has - in any medium, not just video games.Īnd, unlike a lot of people, I think this is a story that only works as a video game, and it only works as a sequel. Jerry and Marlene did not ask for Ellie's permission and were perfectly happy to operate on an unconscious girl against her consent. Marlene then refused to let him make peace with Ellie before the surgery and ordered a soldier to march him out at gunpoint under threat of death. These weapons were originally his and Tess's and had been stolen by Robert and then requisitioned by the Fireflies. Marlene and by extension, the Fireflies, broke their promise to Joel by not giving him the weapons he had agreed to smuggle Ellie for. Joel's decision being made by the above retcons to seem entirely selfish and evil. Also why did ND change his race from black to white? Did they think we wouldn't care about him if he was black or was so that Abby wouldn't be a black character that antagonised the player and suffered over the course of the game? Jerry was a tired surgeon in a dingy, run down operating room not an immaculate professional in a pristine state of the art hospital. The Fireflies were a militia, not charitable do-gooders. Abby leaving Ellie and Dina alive AGAIN is a cause for serious concern over her mental faculties. Abby leaving Ellie and Tommy alive is laughable. Tommy offering his and Joel's names to a stranger is ridiculous. Characters teleporting over the map, characters losing all common sense. That last story detail was retconned in Part 2. She also knew Joel was lying at the end of the first game. In Tlou1, she was hopeful and cared deeply for Joel. They manipulated game footage by aging up Joel in flashback custcenes to make us believe he would have a bigger part in the story, replacing Jesse with Joel in a particular cutscene and neglecting to mention that there would be a new playable character.Įllie's character and personality was drastically different, beyond the bounds of reasonable development. Trust that we'll do right by them." I don't think he did. ![]() A quote by Neil Druckmann - "we really wanted to honour "blank" and "blank". I was fully prepared for the "death" but the execution (forgive the pun) was disrespectful. This is a stupid reason which some people do use and shouldn't even be considered a valid argument. This is just my opinion of course, I know I’ll get downvoted but I thought I’d share because it’s just a echo chamber in here saying this game is perfection. I really do like subversion and darkness in my stories but this is a poor attempt at that in all honesty. ![]() I can write a whole paper on how this was doomed to fail just by the prospect of there even being a sequel but they took it even further and disappointed me a lot. They took a risk with the format (which I commend and support in storytelling), but not every risk pays off and In my opinion they missed the mark heavily. It sours the whole experience when a narrative and character driven game lacks a well executed story and nuanced characters. It had the potential to be great but is watered down by poor choices in character motivations/story direction and pacing. I love how it looks and the gameplay is good but I expected more innovation after 7 years. These are my biggest complaints which I can elaborate exceedingly further on but I digress. If this wasn’t a Last Of Us game it would get nowhere near the accolades it’s gotten. When I initially beat the game I liked the whole thing but the more I thought about it I liked it less and realized I was just trying to compensate for my love for the first game and the story and characters are extremely flawed. ![]() I think the way the story was paced and written was awful. I like Abby as a character and the idea of telling half the story from her perspective. Here is some new ones then: I liked the death and i knew it was inevitable with a part 2. ![]()
